Mr. Rogers once said that the biggest disservice adults do to children is to push them to activity without giving them a chance to reflect on what they did and how they felt. Remember, everything is new to a child.
This is no less true for college students - who are facing a new and often overwhelming world without the support system that they have always known.
They are told to rush to grow up, rush to their next class, rush to get a job, rush to get married, rush... rush... rush...
With no time to stop, breath and reflect.
When our world is spinning out of control it is more important than ever to take a moment to process our thoughts and emotions, otherwise we could find ourself spiraling into bad habits, paralyzed by fear.
No wonder mental health is an ongoing issue on college campuses.
We at WCCCM are looking at a new form of campus ministry - one that works heavily with local churches to provide a safety net for these students, but also allows them to relax and process everything that they are experiencing and feeling. We do this through two main focuses: RENEW and REFLECT.
RENEW is our weekly meeting in which we take time to RELEASE the pressures of life and RELAX into the arms of God. We do this through prayer (release) and worship (relax).
REFLECT is when we process life through a filter of faith. We do this is by online interviews and discussions with life experts who show how they use their faith to overcome and explain the issues that we face every day. We also have reflection times in which we meet one on one or in small groups to discuss our thoughts, experiences, and emotions and how the Bible teaches us to deal with these things.
In short, instead of just lecturing and speaking to our students, we listen and guide them to think through all the thoughts and emotions that have been controlling them.
