Pedestrian Safety Tips
  • Use the crosswalks on 12th Street at Kennedy, Bunting and North Avenue.
  • The crosswalk at Glenwood Avenue has been closed and it is unlawful to cross there.
  • Please activate the flashing lights at crosswalks to alert motorists that you are crossing.
  • Remember that traffic may not stop for pedestrians waiting to enter a crosswalk.
  • Make eye contact with the motorist before entering the crosswalk, ensuring the motorist stops.
  • When using a crosswalk at a median, stop at the median and make sure motorists see you before continuing across the street.
  • At dusk and into evening, wear light-colored or reflective clothing when walking to increase your visibility.
  • Jaywalking and crossing an intersection diagonally in unlawful. Fines for jaywalking can cost you up to a $50 fine.

Be a Safe Campus Motorist
  • STOP at the triangle yield markings, located 20 feet before pedestrian crosswalks. This is to ensure that motorists traveling in both lanes have a clear view of crosswalk areas.
  • Slow down to observe pedestrians in the area and heighten your awareness at crosswalks and intersections. Make eye contact with pedestrians before moving.
  • Be aware that the penalty for not observing crosswalk areas and passing another vehicle that is stopped in the crosswalk is $60 and 3 points on your driving record.
  • Be aware that the penalty for failing to yield to pedestrians at a crosswalk is $75 and 4 points on your driving record.
  • Bicyclists — be aware that the penalty for failing to dismount your bicycle before entering the roadway from the sidewalk is $50

Basic Street & Campus Safety
  • Wherever you are, stay alert and tuned into your surroundings.
  • Send the message that you are calm, confident and know where you are going.
  • Trust your instincts. If something or someone is making you feel uneasy, remove yourself from the environment.
  • Find a friend to walk or jog with late at night or early in the morning.
  • Tell someone where you'll be and when you'll return.
  • Carry a cell phone.
  • When going to a party, always use the buddy system.
